Jim Sanborn: Atomic Time

Since 1998, Jim Sanborn has been building a comprehensive installation about the Manhattan Project and the origin of the U.S. nuclear weapons program. This installation, titled Critical Assembly, and a related series of photographs, Atomic Time, was shown at the Corcoran Gallery of Art from November 1, 2003 through January 26, 2004. Atomic Time: Pure Science and Seduction presents Jim Sanborn’s vision of the Historic Laboratory that proved to be not only the cradle of the atomic bomb, but also of the technological age that has so thoroughly defined our lives ever since. For this exhibition, Sanborn combined his long-standing interests in invisible natural forces and secrecy. The exhibition features Critical Assembly, a major installation inspired by the Manhattan Project (1942-55), the first nuclear weapons program at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in New Mexico, and a series of photographs titled Atomic Time. The 96-page fully illustrated catalogue features an interview with the artist by curator Milena Kalinovska and essays by Barbara London, Associate Curator of Video and Media at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Howard Morland, activist and author of The Secret that Exploded; and Jonathan P. Binstock, the exhibition’s curator, who was the Curator of Contemporary Art at the Corcoran Gallery of Art.
